One of the most frequently asked questions by guests in the Summer is what’s it like here in the winter?
Most winters at Stavehøl are damp, dark with the occasional fall of snow. But some years bring a ‘true winter’ – and the winter of 2025/26 is one of those. Cold, dark and with snow lying for weeks on end, making life more difficult and incovenient.
Our access track, Stavehøl vej, is a one kilometre gravel road through the open very windswept fields to the nearest main road.
It doesn’t take much snow to close the track, along with gusty winds which drive thick drifts of snow. Then we have to park at the waterfall car park and walk the 450 metres across the snowy wastes to our property. Stomping through thick snow with frequent bitingly cold winds off the sea is not much fun, and makes shopping, going to work and school and running errands that much harder.
We can pay for the track to be snow ploughed but the track does not stay clear for long with drifting snow blown off the fields often long after the initial snow fall. Failing to being cautious enough can lead to our car being stuck at the house with us and then having to make the tough kilometre walk to the nearest bus stop. That just happened last week and we spent 2 tough hours hand shovelling snow off the road to get to work.
If the biting winds dies down and the sun comes out then for a while the inconvenience can be forgotten and we can enjoy the snowy landscapes on sled or cross country skis.
The volunteers of Bornholms Skivenner make some lovely skiing trails in the forests of Almindingen and the little ski hill may even be open for downhill.
But after dealing with snowy conditions for almost 2 months we are all desperate for the first signs of Spring.
